The Registrar of Aboriginal Corporations

An independent statutory office holder who administers the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976. This Act guides how Indigenous corporations are run. The Office of the Registrar of Aboriginal Corporations (ORAC) supports and regulates the corporations that are incorporated under the Act. It does this in a variety of ways, for example, by advising them on how to incorporate, by training board members and key staff in good corporate governance, by making sure they comply with the law and intervening when needed.

Australian Government Envirofund
The Australian Government Envirofund is the local action component of the Australian Government's $3 billion Natural Heritage Trust. It helps communities undertake local projects aimed at conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable resource use.

Community groups and individuals can apply for grants of up to $50,000 (GST inclusive) to carry out on-ground and other actions to target local problems.

Community Water Grants
The Australian Government's Community Water Grants programme offers grants to help local community organisations save, recycle or improve the health of their local water resources.

Grants are available for projects related to:

Round 3, which was launched on 23 April 2007, is the final round of Community Water Grants funding under the programme's $200 million allocation. To apply for Round 3 of Community Water Grants, you must first register your details with us using our online registration form. The registration form will be open until Friday 22 June. You must register before then to be able submit an application. Online applications will close at 11am (EST) on 4 July 2007.

Cook Shire Council

Cook Shire is the largest land area shire in Queensland occupying over 80% of the Cape York Peninsula Region encompasssing 115,000 km2. The southern boundary comprises in part the Bloomfield River, while to the north the Shire extends to the 11th parallel of latitude, found just beyond the Jardine River.

Community Councils

In 1984, Queensland established a system of community level land trusts, to own and administer former reserves under a special form of title called a Deed of Grant in Trust.
In 1986 the community of Hope Vale, north of Cooktown became the first to receive a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT)

Hope Vale Aboriginal Council.

Each trust area became a local government area. Incorporated Aboriginal Councils, which elect representatives every three years, manage the community's affairs.
The Councils are able to make by-laws, appoint community police and are responsible for maintaining housing, infrastructure, the Community Development Employment Program (CDEP), similar to work for the dole, licences and hunting and camping permits.
