The People:
Ancient Aboriginal history is recorded orally by the stories and ceremonies of the numerous clan groups of Cape York Peninsula. These tell of hunting, gathering and nurturing the land, sea and resources of the region. The oral history also records momentous events, such as rising sea levels, cyclones, droughts, fires and the coming of the Europeans. Today, people of many nationalities live and work on Cape York, resulting in a diverse and dynamic society.

Towns and Communities:
Cape York Peninsula is sparsely populated, with eighteen communities spread across the region. Weipa and Cooktown are the two main service centres with all facilities expected of a major community. Most smaller communities have basic infrastructure and receive a range of services from government and non-government organisations that sevice regional centres.
