Reef Rescue (RR) is focused on improving the quality of water entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoon, by reducing the amount of sediment, nutrients, and chemicals (herbicides and pesticides) in runoff from agricultural land. Certain management practices have been identified as contributing to the decline in water quality, and RR aims to encourage the adoption of improved practices by providing funding to assist with the transition. Better management practices can halt the decline in water quality in the Great Barrier Reef, and increase its resilience to future threats such as climate change.

The majority of Reef Rescue funds ($146 million) are allocated to Water Quality Incentive Grants to support voluntary action by farmers and land managers along the Great Barrier Reef coast to change land management practices, and CYSF has funding available for both graziers and horticulturalists.
